Toasting the success of Cask Ale

There’s lots of smiling faces at Purity as we celebrate the findings of Pete Brown’s ‘The Cask Report - Britain's National Drink’.
This annual report gives the definitive analysis of the state of Britain’s cask beer market and it was nothing but good news for 2009.

The reports headlines are:

•  Increase in like-for-like sales in many pubs, plus 3000 new pubs stocking cask ale

•  Cask is growing its share of the overall beer market and has increased from 11% in 2007 to    13.5%

•  There have been 400,000 new cask ale drinkers in the last 12 months

•  The number of female drinkers has doubled in a year to 1.3 million

•  31% of beer drinkers are now cask ale drinkers

•  More breweries trading than at any time in the past 60 years

Our MD, Paul Halsey, said: “We are passionate about real ale and our whole company ethos is about popularising cask ale and introducing it to a wider audience, so this new report is fantastic news for the industry. Over the last year alone, the number of women who drink cask has more than doubled and around 400,000 people have tried cask beer for the first time. As an industry we need to ensure that we do all we can to help continue this trend.”

Pete Brown, the report's author, said, "Turnaround stories don't get much better than cask ale. In a shrinking on-trade beer market, cask is the only category to show growth, albeit modest, of 1% in the first half of 2009. Its share of the on-trade beer market now stands at 13.5%, up from 11% in 2007. But what's most important for Britain's licensees is that there's compelling evidence to show that cask beer can offer them a 'lifeline' out of the recession."
